Besought

Why build an exquisite veena1,
Only to be heedlessly cast-off into dust?
Tell me O! Sivasakthi2
You, (who) created me with a scintillating mind
Grant me fortitude
To devote my life in welfare of this State
Tell me O! Sivasakthi – Would you let me
Become a burden to this land?

Like the velocity of a rolling ball
Grant me a body in tandem motion with the speed of thought,
Unblemished heart I seek,
Eternally rejuvenating brilliant life, I seek,
Even as my flesh(body) scorches –
I ask for a soul that sings praise of Sivasakthi!
Steadfast mind I beseech –
In bestowing these, do you have any demurral?

Footnotes: 1 Veena – is an ancient Indian string-instrument
2 Sivasakthi – “Sakthi” means power or energy. Sivasakthi is an avathar of Parvathi who is Lord Siva’s wife, according to Hindu mythology.

Note: This poem is a prayer to Goddess Sivashakthi seeking favors. The poet makes his case, by asking the Goddess as to why someone would create an exquisite musical instrument only to let it decay in neglect? What the creator would want, is for the veena to fulfill its purpose as a musical instrument. Just as the veena-maker would want his creation to fulfill its purpose, Bharathiyar asks his creator to grant him the boons so that he could fulfill his purpose as a human with a scintillating mind, in service to humanity.
