Translator’s note on the above poem:
These are poems that defy translation. The Tamil words ‘Sadha’ means always, constant and also a name – for instance Sadha can be a full name or pet name for both male and female. For instance, Sadhanandam for man or Sadha for woman.
The word Sadhasivam means Lord Shiva and also the word Sivam means both name and being still or just be, without straining to do anything. We can go on and on. All these two or three words are language-specific and hence these 16 poems, seemingly simple have more than one layer of meaning and it is very difficult to reproduce their flavor in the English translation.
I tried my best to find an English equivalent to the Tamil term ‘Sadha’. I have used Constant in the place of Sadha. Constant has the meaning Always, stable, steadfast, reliable. Constantino, the male name; Constantina, the female name. Both can be called as Constant. Thus, I’ve used the term Constant both as name and in the meaning always, steadfast etc.
